Abstract
Firefighting capabilities refer to the knowledge, skills, equipment, resources, and
strategies that firefighters and firefighting organizations possess to prevent and
respond to fires and other emergency situations. Firefighting capabilities encompass a
wide range of activities, including fire prevention, fire suppression, rescue operations,
hazardous materials response, and emergency medical services.
This present undertaking aims to identify opportunities for improvement in the
Surallah Fire Station's firefighting capabilities and make recommendations for
addressing any identified weaknesses or gaps. Specifically, the key objectives are: To
determine the firefighting operations of Surallah Fire Station; To determine the
needed support regarding trainings, logistical and other sources to improve capability;
To develop executable plans and strategies based on the status of the operational
capability of the Surallah Fire Station.
The study employed a survey questionnaire because it allowed the researchers
to gather data in a structured and standardized manner.
The results of the study showed that Surallah Fire Station’s fire trucks are
rated as highly satisfactory; road condition and accessibility is rated as satisfactory;
and firefighting resources and capability is highly satisfactory. The problems
encountered in Surallah Fire Station in terms of manpower resources are: Personnel
do not have extensive knowledge how to attack fires according to specific chemicals
used in firefighting; Firefighters do not undergo specialized program such as
responding to HAZMAT or CBRNE incidents; Poor planning with regards to
responding to fire incidents. In terms of firefighting resources, the issues that Surallah
5
Fire Station have encountered include poorly maintained fire trucks being used to
respond to fire incidents, a lack of fire hydrants in close proximity to or on fire
scenes, and inadequate investigation tools for conducting fire incident investigations.
The challenge encountered by Surallah Fire Station in relation to their budget and the
most crucial concern was the insufficient funding for the acquisition of modern
firefighting equipment.
The recommendations are: Provide regular training programs for personnel to
ensure that they have extensive knowledge on how to attack fires according to
specific chemicals used in firefighting. Prioritize regular maintenance and inspection
of their fire trucks to ensure that they are always in optimal condition and can be
relied upon during emergency responses. Explore the possibility of securing
additional funding from the local government or other funding agencies to upgrade
the station's equipment. Surallah Fire Station can explore ways to optimize their
current resources and equipment.
