Abstract
This study aimed to determine the impact of duty shift on the health, wellness and coping mechanisms of the uniformed personnel of Baguio City Police Office and to determine the issues and concerns relative to the management of duty shift. Among the 931 police officers, 300 of them responded positively and among the 129 Barangay Captains, 47 likewise agreed to be part of the research.

This study employed a descriptive research design. The statistical tools used were percentage and mean. The study found that relative to duty shift, BCPO personnel have actual experiences relative to their overall well-being and it appeared that there is an occurrence/experience of symptoms of anxiety and depression or problems with their health/wellness and coping mechanisms. Overall, there is also moderate impact of duty shifting on the health and wellness (physical, mental, and emotional health) of BCPO personnel. In addition, sleep disorders and fatigue have had the greatest impact on the health, wellness and coping mechanism of BCPO Personnel due to duty shifting.

There is a high degree coping mechanism by BCPO personnel to alleviate or balance their health and wellness with their job. Prayers and Meditation had been the most prevalent coping mechanism. The perception of barangay chairmen/women on the work performance between the day and night duty personnel do not differ, as both shifts performed outstandingly.

Despite the challenges faced by both personnel and organization, the organizational work performance of BCPO for the last three years had been very satisfactory.

The most pressing issues and challenges encountered in managing BCPO’s duty shifts that affected the health, wellness and coping mechanisms of police officers were duty workloads, personnel multi-tasking, voluminous compliances and reports and overlapping of duty schedules. The most suggested mechanism to address duty shift to health, wellness, and coping mechanisms was to implement the 8-hour duty or 3 shifts per day schedule.

Finally, to address the issues and concerns on the issue being raised, the “CARE for COPS Program” – Policy Action was proposed to give solutions to the defined gaps.
