Abstract
This study assessed the impact of implementing body-worn cameras and GPS tracking on policing in Ilocos Sur. Surveys and interviews were conducted with police officers and community members to analyze perspectives on the benefits, costs, and strategies for adopting these technologies. Key findings indicate strong agreement that body-worn cameras can enhance police accountability, transparency, and prosecution by capturing visual evidence. However, views were mixed regarding GPS tracking for oversight. Despite concerns about high upfront costs, most respondents favored budget increases and external grants to fund the technologies due to perceived public safety benefits. Based on data analysis, it is concluded that body-worn cameras and GPS tracking have potential to improve policing in Ilocos Sur if carefully implemented through comprehensive training, community engagement, and strategic financial planning.
Key recommendations include developing clear protocols around video storage, access, and privacy to address public concerns while leveraging the accountability benefits of the technologies. Additionally, funding mechanisms should balance municipal budgets, external grants, and community partnerships. Further research should continue monitoring the impact of these technologies on local policies and balanced resource allocation, body-worn cameras and GPS tracking can strengthen transparency, efficiency, and public trust in the Ilocos Sur police force.
