Abstract
Embracing the role of female firefighters during fire operations is crucial for
creating a diverse and inclusive fire service. Women have been working as firefighters
for decades, and their contributions to fire operations are invaluable.
To fully embrace the role of female firefighters during fire operations, fire
departments must ensure that they provide equal opportunities for women to join the
service and advance in their careers. This includes implementing policies and
procedures that promote gender equity, providing adequate training and support for
female firefighters, and addressing any instances of discrimination or harassment.
The present study entitled, “Learning from the Experiences of Female
Firefighters: Case Study of Dumaguete City Fire Station, Philippines,” has the
following objectives: identify the unique experiences of female firefighters during fire
operations; determine the challenges encountered in fire operations; and determine the
solutions of the problems encountered of female firefighters during fire operations.
The researchers used qualitative method, and as such, focus group discussion
was conducted with all the female firefighters in Dumaguete Fire Station.
The researchers concluded that the strengths of female firefighters are
numerous and unique. Their ability to multitask, navigate small spaces with ease, and
think critically in high-pressure situations are just a few examples of how they bring
value to the fire service. The development of effective materials and components has
made firefighting safer for all firefighters, but female firefighters' smaller physiques
can make them even more effective in certain situations. Furthermore, female
firefighters have been shown to be more patient than their male counterparts during

i

fire operations, highlighting their ability to remain calm and focused in highly
stressful situations.
The experience of female firefighters at Dumaguete Fire Station highlights the
importance of creating an inclusive and supportive workplace culture in the fire
service. By providing opportunities for female firefighters to develop their skills and
advance their careers, the station demonstrates a commitment to gender equity and
inclusion that can be a powerful motivator for female applicants. The station's
approach underscores the need to take proactive steps to address gender-based biases
or barriers and create an environment where all firefighters, regardless of gender, feel
valued and supported. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and respect, fire
departments can attract and retain a diverse and talented workforce that is better
equipped to serve their communities and protect lives and property.
The researchers recommend to create training programs that are inclusive of
different body types and physical abilities, providing mentorship and support to
female firefighters during training, and addressing biases and stereotypes about
gender and physical ability; and incorporating psychological training to help female
firefighters develop coping strategies for the stress and isolation that may occur
during training and on the job.
