Abstract
Education is a fundamental human right and a catalyst for personal and societal
development. However, marginalized groups like Persons Deprived of Liberty face
significant barriers to accessing quality education. This study examines the educational
needs of PDLs in Danao City Jail Male Dormitory, focusing on literacy, numeracy, and
entrepreneurial and livelihood skills, to explain the improvement of the Alternative
Learning System. This research sought to (1) determine the socio-demographic
characteristics of PDLs in Danao City Jail Male Dormitory, (2) identify their level of
literacy, numeracy, and entrepreneurial and livelihood skills, (3) assess their educational
needs in these areas, (4) evaluate how ALS addresses these needs, and (5) identify areas
for improvement in ALS. A quantitative research design was employed, with data collected
through a structured survey questionnaire administered to a census of 64 PDLs currently
enrolled in the ALS. The questionnaire assessed perceived needs and preferences regarding
various educational topics. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to analyze the data.
The findings revealed that while PDLs possessed good fundamental knowledge in literacy,
numeracy, and entrepreneurial and livelihood skills, they lacked practical application of
these skills. They expressed a strong desire for education focused on real-world
applications, such as financial management and community development. Although ALS
partially fulfilled their educational needs, it fell short in addressing complex skills and
practical applications. This study highlights the need for a more tailored and
comprehensive ALS that emphasizes practical skills development.
