Abstract
Introduction

The word Barangayanihan was coined from the words "BARANGAY", the smallest local government unit, and the famous Filipino tradition "BAYANIHAN", meaning communal unity and cooperation to achieve a particular goal. The concept of Bayanihan can be traced back to our country's tradition practiced in rural areas, wherein the town's people, especially the men, lend a hand to a family who is moving to a new place. It was not a mere transfer of residence and personal belongings of the family, but the relocation of the entire house to a new place. In order for the volunteers to carry the house, bamboo poles are tied length-wise and cross-wise underthe house to serve as handle and to ensure that the house would not fall apart during the transport. It would approximately take around 15- 20 volunteers to carry the whole house, and the volunteers had to move in unison, to the family's new residence. To express their gratitude, the family serve food to everybody at their new residence.

The Bayanihan spirit shows Filipinos' concept of helping one another, most especially in times of need, without expecting anything in return. Filipinos strongly believe in helping their "kababayans" (fellow countrymen) in way possible. Bayanihan is a beautiful Filipino practice of helping one another which cannot be seen anywhere in the world.

The Bayanihan spirit is still alive amongst Filipinos even in modern days, and has been demonstrated in many forms, especially during natural calamities and/or disasters. Filipinos will go out of their way to help their countrymen in need. The Bayanihan spirit is one of the many beautiful things that Filipinos own and can be proud of.
