Abstract
Occupational stress within the Philippine National Police (PNP) Medico-Legal Officers has garnered increasing concern, impacting both individual well-being and organizational efficiency. This research adopts Grounded Theory and the Job Demand-Resource (JDR) model as its theoretical frameworks to explore the lived experiences of seven Medico-legal Officers and the complex dynamics of work related stress within the PNP Forensic Group.

The study employed diverse methods of data collection, conducting interviews both in-person and via zoom with medico-legal officers having over five years of active service. Ethical protocols were stringently followed, including the provisions of informed consent and obtaining permissions from the PNP Forensic Group Director ensuring strict confidentiality and ethical conduct throughout the research process.

Thematic analysis was utilized to meticulously analyze the qualitative data obtained from the interviews. Colaizzi’s (1978) strategy guided the data analysis process, extracting significant themes from participants’ responses. This analytical approach uncovered four key themes highlighting the challenges faced by Medico-legal officers concerning workload, coping mechanisms, administrative support, and the impact on their well-being.

The study’s conclusions underscore the conundrum stemming from insufficient personnel and its ripple effects on stress, workload, and efficiency. Coping strategies through diverse, appeared insufficient to mitigate the negative impacts of work related stress, emphasizing the need for comprehensive interventions.

Based on the conclusions drawn, recommendations are proposed to address these issues comprehensively. Suggestions include augmenting the number of Medico-legal Officers, refining work designations, bolstering coping strategies through initiatives like “Bantay Kaisipan”, advocating for development programs. The proposed action plan, “Innovate MELO Workforce’, aims to alleviate stress by increasing personnel, enhancing administrative support, organizing annual forums for updates and fostering camaraderie among officers.

This research aims to illuminate the intricate challenges faced by Medico-legal Officers and provides actionable recommendations to alleviate occupational stress, thereby contributing to the enhancement of their well-being and work performance.
