Abstract
ABSTRACT
Fire suppression and rescue operation have always been the top priorities of the Bureau of Fire protection. To achieve these goals successfully, reliable fire engines fit for maximum use and equipped with excellent tools should be ready at all times. Subsequently, fire engines in the Philippines are only serviceable for 5 to 15 years before they are to be replaced. However, due to the lack of financial capacity to provide all the stations with new fire engines, local stations are at the mercy of venerable and deteriorating fire and rescue apparatus. That is why the researchers conducted action research to understand the maintenance procedure of fire stations with venerable fire engines with the use of the Reliability-centered Maintenance (RCM) concept.
Results show that personnel experienced difficulties that hinder their prompt response to operations. The respondents accounted preventive procedures such as monthly inspections of the engine aided by a mechanic. This allows them to identify parts needed to be replaced.
The study also shows that the respondents are new to predictive maintenance procedure which is very important when dealing with emergency apparatus, hence, there is no readily available plan on the predictive maintenance procedure of the venerable fire engines. This study suggests that a standardized maintenance procedure should be laid out and followed by all stations to ensure that the fire engines, venerable or not, are reliable and efficient to use.
