Abstract
The emotional and psychological survival of a detainee depends upon his ability to tolerate the deprivations of prison system which is determined by individual coping skills, personality factors, and level of social support and resources available to them. Using the IPO Design (Input-Process-Output), the researchers were able to formulate different action plans that will enable the reinforcement of the respondents’ current coping strategies. In this regard, the coping strategies of the said persons were measured using a controlled 4-Point Likert Scale survey instrument, with statements evaluating their personality on how they help themselves go through challenges/ tasks, defense mechanisms, and emotional turmoil—clustered into three groups: (a) Task-Oriented Strategy; (b) Emotion-Oriented Strategy; and (c) DefenseOriented Strategy. Gathering the survey results, the researchers found out that: (a) on non-index crime PDL group, task-oriented strategy was effective (in the index crime group, it was just moderately effective) to lessen the stress and pressure feltby PDLs inside the jail; (b) emotion-oriented strategy is an acceptable coping strategy that was moderately effective in alleviating the burdens of PDL in dealing with the challenges of detention; and (c) that on both index and non-indexclassifications of crime, PDL rarely or are not utilizing defense-oriented strategy to cope with their condition inside the jail for it was rated as less effective by the PDLs.
