Abstract
The Philippines have experienced emergencies involving ammonia. Thus, the role of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in responding to these emergencies involving ammonia is crucial. Exploring the experiences of the BFP personnel in responding to ammonia emergencies to identify the challenges and provide solutions to these problems. In-depth interviews were conducted to BFP personnel of Navotas City Fire Station and it revealed that there are no specific protocols tailored in handling ammonia incidents. The inadequacy in both manpower and equipment readiness exposes the responders to significant risks and leads to delays in containing ammonia incidents. Consequently, prolonged exposure increases health risks for both the BFP responders and the civilians involved. In proposing a framework to augment the responsiveness of the BFP responders at Navotas City Fire Station, the key elements involve minimizing the impact of ammonia incidents, ensuring a rapid and coordinated response, fostering continuous improvement and adaptability, and keeping the public well-informed and reassured.
